Goldie Sayers Professional Athlete Interview

Introduction

The following is an interview with world class athlete Goldie Sayers, who is a British Javelin thrower. Goldie is a double Olympian - 2004 and 2008 – and has competed at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships.

1.What has been the best piece of advice you have received?

Success is a decision not a gift.

2. How important is nutrition to your success and performance?

It is very important to me to aid my training, keeping my energy levels steady and most importantly to aid recovery from training in order to get the best out of every day's work.

3. Please could you outline your nutrition during a normal training day and then on a competition day?

AM - 3 egg omelette with broccoli, Parma ham and spinach, greens...supplements, fish oils, probiotic, glutamine

During morning training - amino acids, creatine. Creatine is available in capsules online

LUNCH - chicken, salad, quinoa, nuts

Post 2nd session - protein shake with dextrose

Late afternoon - supershake (protein, spinach, nuts, goji berries, cocoa nibs, maca powder, flaxseeds, almond butter)

4.      Please could you outline what a normal day of training involves?

Varies daily but an example would be:-

AM - jog/stretch, warm up - running drills, dynamic flexibility, 3 acceleration runs

Medicine ball throws in various different positions/rotations

Plyometrics - 5x SLJ, STJ, 3 Bunnies, 5 SL bounds or hurdle bounds

PM - Weights...generally three main lifts e.g. snatch, bench, single leg step ups, then rotational abs and calf raises

Cool down

5. What advice would you give to anybody wanting to get fit and improve their health?

Set yourself a goal you are passionate about and then organise your lifestyle in order to achieve it.

6. From your experience, for instance pre-season training, have you got any tips on how to stay motivated when the training gets tough and challenging?

If you are not trying you best and giving your all then a competitor will be!

7. What has been the highlight of your career?

Breaking the British Record in the Olympic final to place 4th in Beijing 2008.
